Is the Bimini Road in the Bahamas a Part of the Lost Atlantis?

What is the Bimini Road – How it was discovered – Why the Bimini Road is thought to be man-made – The Bahamas were dry land once – Atlantis theories – Could the Bahamas be a part of Atlantis – Giant Demigods in the world mythologies and holy books – Atlantis as a world-wide civilization – How to explore the Bimini Road by yourself

In February 2019 Michael and I sailed to Bimini on our sailboat Elysia. Besides all the other wonderful things on these small Bahamian islands, there was something particularly interesting to me – the Bimini Road.

The Bimini Road is a pretty common snorkeling site. However, when I mentioned it to some other cruisers, there was no enthusiasm. “Just a bunch of plain non-interesting rocks”. But for me those were not just a bunch of rocks. Those were the coolest rocks! The rocks that possibly open the door to one of the biggest mysteries of our history: the lost Atlantis.

Sailing Bahamas

Finally, we did find company: our friends Nikki and Mike from Sailing Vessel Anahata wanted to go with us. “I have been dreaming to see this! I know the story!” Nikki exclaimed.

So early one morning, we embarked on a 4-mile sail along the islands to find the mystical underwater site. Nikki typed the coordinates on her phone, and soon we were right on top of it. We jumped into the crystal clear water, and there it was… The Bimini Road, or, as many believe, the road to Atlantis.

What is the Bimini Road and How It Was Discovered

Off of North Bimini, at about 15 feet of depth, lies a rock formation that is about half a mile long and consists of  rectangular, perfectly aligned limestone blocks. Erosion rounded these stones a bit, but you can still see the shape. The borders of the formation are so well-defined that they clearly resemble a road or a top of a wall. Whatever it is, it looks definitely man-made.

Bimini Road

The Bimini Road was discovered September 2, 1968 by three divers, Joseph Manson Valentine, Jacques Mayol and Robert Angove. Since then, the formation has been visited and examined by multiple geologists, archaeologists, anthropologists, marine engineers, divers, and, of course, innumerable tourists. In addition to the Bimini Road, investigators have found two additional “pavement-like” linear features that lie parallel to the Bimini Road.

Why the Bimini Road is Thought to Be Man-made

It is just too organized! Giant blocks of limestone are arranged in a very straight fashion, one after the other. Many of the the blocks appear to have been originally cut at right angles before the erosion smoothed the edges. Wait a minute! We know that nature doesn’t like right angles. There are still many discussions whether the blocks are nature-made or man-made, but after seeing them myself, I cannot imagine how nature would create something as logical and composed.

Using radiocarbon dating, the researchers concluded that the average age of the construction is about 3500 years old. But you can only use radiocarbon dating on organic material. Most likely, all the organic material was destroyed by thousands of years in the salt water. For stones, Uranium-Thorium dating is generally used, although it cannot be as precise as the radiocarbon. Uranium-Thiorum dating of Bimini Road claims the stones are at least 11,000 to 15,000 years old.

The Bahamas Were Dry Land Once

The Bahamas is a group of about 700 islands and cays, located in the Western Atlantic Ocean. The interesting thing about this archipelago is that the islands themselves are the “tops” of submerged carbonate platforms, which we know as Bahama Banks: The Little Bahama Bank, the Great Bahama Bank and the small Cay Sal Bank.

The depth of the Bahama Banks is very shallow. The deepest spots are about 80 feet, but in general, the Banks are only about 25-30 feet deep. The limestone that makes up the Bahama Banks dates as far as Cretaceous Period, some as far as Jurassic (Dinosaurs!! 🙂 ).

It is a proven fact that during the ice ages the whole territory of the Bahama Banks was above water. It was a pretty large continent, surrounded by deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean (for example, the depth of the Tongue of the Ocean that cuts through the Great Bahama Bank in the middle, can reach 6000 feet). The islands, which are above water now, used to be “tops of the mountains”.

The last ice age lasted from about 2 million years ago to 11,700 years ago. At the end of that era the glaciers melted, the Bahama Banks were flooded and the whole continent went underwater.

The Location of the Mythical Atlantis

The first person who mentioned the story of Atlantis, was the great Greek Philosopher Plato. He said there were multiple stories and poems that have been passed down from generation to generation. According to the information Plato had, Atlantis existed about 9,000 years before his own time.

Atlantis was described as a large island, as big as a continent, somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. According to Athanasius Kircher, a German scientist of the 17th century, suggested it looked something like this (it is oriented with South on the top):

Accoring to the work of Ignatius Loyola Donnelly’s popular book, released in 1882, Atlantis: The Antediluvian World, the location of the mystical country was here:

Location of Atlantis according to Donnelli, Public Domain

We know that the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is very deep and there’s just no way it was ever about water. But if we think of the Bahama Banks over water, they would form exactly this: a large island/continent in the Atlantic.

According to the myth, the land was inhabited by the advanced civilization of extremely tall and strong people, who unfortunately were the victims of the catastrophic flood. Atlantis went under water and its inhabitants disappeared forever.

Can it be that exactly this catastrophe happened to the Bahamas around 11,000 years BC and it caused the continent to go underwater and form a completely unique sea floor that we know as the Bahama Banks today?

Giant Demigods in Greek Mythology

The Greek myth tells us that during a very very ancient time, when gods walked the Earth, there were frequent marriages between gods and Earth women. Their children were demigods (half god, half human). They were taller and bigger than normal men and often proved themselves as heroes. Perhaps the most well-known examples are Hercules and Prometheus. Another giant was named Atlas, and he “gave” his name to Atlantic Ocean and Atlantis (island of Atlas).

After a while, the civilization of Atlantis became powerful, but grew arrogant and spiritually ugly. So Zeus got disappointed and destroyed them, drowning their cities in a massive flood.

Giants Mentioned in Other Cultures

Other cultures and holy texts mention giants as well. Some early Egyptian Pharaohs were over 8 feet tall. Armenian mythology talks about Hayk, a giant who helped construct the tower of Babel. Bulgarian mythology mentions giants called “ispolini”.

There are giants in Baltic, Celtic, Basque, Indian and Native American myths. It cannot be a coincidence that mythology of pretty much every culture has its own giants. They appear to have been something fairly common in ancient times.

Archaeologists actually still find skeletons and mummies that are 7-8 feet tall.

Pretty much every culture has their own story of the Great Flood as well. Can that be a coincidence? Hardly…

What Does the Bible Say?

In the Bible itself, in Genesis 6, we read:

[6:1] When people began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born to them,
[6:2] the sons of God saw that they were fair; and they took wives for themselves of all that they chose…….
…….[6:4] The Nephilim were on the earth in those days – and also afterward – when the sons of God went in to the daughters of humans, who bore children to them. These were the heroes that were of old, warriors of renown.

So, even the Holy Book mentions Nephilim, or giants (in King James Version). Are those creatures the same as the inhabitants of Atlantis? Are the Nephilim the divine ancestors of the demigod inhabitants of Atlantis? Just like Atlantis, this race disappeared from the Earth, possibly as the result of the Great Flood as well. How come that we find absolutely the same story both in the Bible and in the ancient myths?

Was Atlantis a World-Wide Civilization?

So can it be that at one point giants really walked the Earth? That it is not just a story, a fairy tale? Can it be that the inhabitants of Atlantis were a part of one world-wide race of very tall and strong people, known as “giants” in different cultures?

If so, the Bimini Road is a part of something big, something that connects it to the other great ancient monuments. Just think about that: the shape and the alignment of the blocks are very similar to those used in Pyramid construction, or the famous Stonehenge…

Researchers still haven’t come to an agreement as for where Atlantis could be. Is is fictional? Well, Troy was also a fictional city until it was actually discovered.

Ancient cities or man-made constructions were found in various ends of the world. Some, such as an underwater city in the Aegian Sea, are about 3000 years old, which corresponds to the Ancient Greece era, but some of them are much, much older. These are just some examples (the links only lead to one of the many articles about the subject):

And how many sites we still don’t know about? For example, Gobekli Tepe was only discovered in the second half of the 20th century, which is very recently. The ocean ground remains widely unknown: we know less about it than we know about space.

A recent discovery of a stone formation that is strikingly similar to the Bimini Road, only adds to the mystery. In the early 2000s, several large stone platforms were found in the water near Andros, the island to the Southeast from Bimini. The platforms closely resembles those of the Bimini Road.

The Conclusion

So what do we have here, according to all the myths, texts and tales? We have a civilization of ancient creatures, who were the hybrid offspring of gods and humans. These people were very strong and tall, thus mentioned as giants. This civilization spread all over the world and was very advanced.

It looks like it existed roughly 15,000 thousand years ago (perhaps even earlier) and ended around 10,000 years ago. The reason for its demise appears to be a cataclysmic flood, which destroyed the cities and killed most of the residents.

We also know that there are still places on Earth, which appear to be the evidence of the existence of this civilization. Some of them are on the ground, some, as the result of the flood, remain underwater.

The Bimini Road might be one of those places.

Where You Can Find the Bimini Road And Explore It Yourself

If you’d like to explore the Bimini Road yourself, you need to go to Bimini Island of the Bahamas. You can fly or sail there. If you don’t have a boat, you can buy one of the numerous dive or snorkel tours that are offered by local companies.

If you have a boat, you can anchor in the vicinity of the Bimini Road. These coordinates will put you right above it:

25° 45’99.5″ N 79° 16’71.2″ W

(for Google Maps use this format: 25 45.995 -079 16.712)

And what do you think of the possibility that the Bimini Road might have been a part of Atlantis? Do you think Atlantis was a worldwide civilization and had cities everywhere in the world, ruins of which we now find above and below water? What other locations do you think were the home of citizens of Atlantis? Aegean Sea? Antarctica? Share your thoughts and stories in the comments !
